Inaugural Parliamentary Committee Meeting

Yesterday, 4th June, The New Hunting Ban hosted its inaugural Parliamentary Committee meeting.

Neil Duncan-Jordan MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee, welcomed our staff, Advisory Panel members, fellow MPs, and guests to the House of Commons. He spoke of his vision for a future free from the cruelty of hunting with hounds.

Following Neil’s introduction, Rhys Giles, Director of The New Hunting Ban, presented on the state of hunting in 2025. His presentation covered the legality of hunting and the myth of trail hunting. Experts, monitors, police, government, and the wider public all agree: trail hunting is a fiction. Rhys also spoke about the founding of The New Hunting Ban and its mission to deliver a “comprehensive and holistic change to the law.”

The New Hunting Ban Legal Counsel, Rebecca Reddington, leads a discussion on the potential introduction of a ‘recklessness clause’.

The meeting concluded with a discussion led by our legal counsel, Rebecca Reddington, on a proposed amendment to the Hunting Act 2004—specifically, the introduction of a ‘recklessness clause’. Advisors, MPs, and guests contributed to the conversation, demonstrating the depth and breadth of expertise in the room.

This first Parliamentary Committee meeting also marked a critical moment for coalition-building. MPs from across the political spectrum expressed great interest in working collaboratively to address the challenges of delivering a final end to hunting with hounds. Their willingness to engage reflects the growing recognition that the current legal framework has never been fit for purpose, and the overwhelming public support for changes to the law.

Perran Moon MP

“I want to see a final end to hunting with hounds because…

It is cruel, barbaric and has no place in 21st century Britain.

Jayne Kirkham MP

“I want to see a final end to hunting with hounds because…

It’s about time!

Sean Woodcock MP

“I want to see a final end to hunting with hounds because…

I want no more animals dying in the name of ‘sport’

Next, The New Hunting Ban will host the Hunting Hearings—a series of open talks featuring advisors and guest speakers sharing their experiences and hopes for change. These events will be hosted by parliamentarians, and further details will be announced soon.
